“Lorem Ipsum” is the most well-known placeholder text in the design and publishing world. Originating in the 1500s, this scrambled Latin text has been a cornerstone for typesetters and designers seeking to fill space in mockups and layouts without distracting from the visual elements of a project. Despite its wide usage, many are unaware of its fascinating history.
The text derives from a work by Cicero, a Roman statesman and philosopher, titled De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (“On the Ends of Good and Evil”). Sections of this classical work were altered into nonsensical Latin to create what we now recognize as “Lorem Ipsum.” Its adaptation as filler text began during the Renaissance when early typesetters used it to test layouts for books and publications.
Lorem Ipsum’s purpose goes beyond aesthetics. It ensures that the focus remains on the design rather than the content, allowing clients and designers to collaborate effectively.
